Description

Deliciously chewy homemade sourdough bagels that are perfect for any occasion and can be customized with a variety of toppings.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups sourdough starter
  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • Water for boiling
  • Toppings (sesame seeds, poppy seeds, etc.)

Instructions

  1. Mix the sourdough starter, bread flour, salt, and sugar in a large mixing bowl until a shaggy dough forms.
  2. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes until it feels smooth and elastic.
  3. Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise for 4-6 hours until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) about 30 minutes before the dough is ready.
  5. Punch down the risen dough, divide into 8-12 pieces, and shape into bagels.
  6. Boil each bagel in a large pot of boiling water with baking soda for 1-2 minutes on each side.
  7. Sprinkle your chosen toppings on the bagels while moist and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Allow to cool briefly before slicing and serving with your favorite toppings.

Notes

Bagels can be stored in a sealed bag for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
