Experience the comfort of Fried Steak and Gravy, a dish with crispy, tender steak smothered in a rich, creamy gravy.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 pieces beef steak (Sirloin or round steak)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Vegetable oil for frying
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch (optional)
Instructions
- Tenderize the steak: Using your meat mallet, pound each piece until it’s about ½ inch thick.
- Mix your dry ingredients: In a bowl, blend the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Combine the wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and buttermilk.
- Bread your steaks: Dredge each steak in the flour mixture, dip into the egg mixture, and coat again in the flour.
- Heat the oil: In a cast iron skillet, pour in enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom of the pan. Heat until shimmering over medium heat.
- Fry the steaks: Carefully place the breaded steak in the skillet and fry for about 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown.
- Make the gravy: In the same skillet, add butter, then pour in the beef broth and heavy cream, stirring until combined.
- Thicken if desired: Stir together cornstarch with a little water and add to the pan to thicken the gravy.
- Serve: Ladle the creamy gravy over the crispy steak.
