Description

Experience the comfort of Fried Steak and Gravy, a dish with crispy, tender steak smothered in a rich, creamy gravy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 pieces beef steak (Sirloin or round steak)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch (optional)

Instructions

  1. Tenderize the steak: Using your meat mallet, pound each piece until it’s about ½ inch thick.
  2. Mix your dry ingredients: In a bowl, blend the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Combine the wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and buttermilk.
  4. Bread your steaks: Dredge each steak in the flour mixture, dip into the egg mixture, and coat again in the flour.
  5. Heat the oil: In a cast iron skillet, pour in enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom of the pan. Heat until shimmering over medium heat.
  6. Fry the steaks: Carefully place the breaded steak in the skillet and fry for about 4-5 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  7. Make the gravy: In the same skillet, add butter, then pour in the beef broth and heavy cream, stirring until combined.
  8. Thicken if desired: Stir together cornstarch with a little water and add to the pan to thicken the gravy.
  9. Serve: Ladle the creamy gravy over the crispy steak.

Notes

Feel free to customize the spices or serve with your favorite sides like mashed potatoes or green beans.
