Description
A delightful appetizer featuring a crispy, seasoned coating on a tender onion, perfect for sharing with your favorite dip.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large onion
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- Cooking spray
- Dipping sauce (e.g., ranch, spicy mayo)
Instructions
- Prepare the onion: Begin by peeling away the papery skin from your onion and slicing it downwards to create petals.
- Mix the flour mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Whisk until evenly blended.
- Submerge the prepared onion in buttermilk, allowing it to soak in the flavor and moisture.
- Carefully lift the onion from the buttermilk, letting any excess drip off, then gently coat it with your flour mixture, ensuring it reaches in between the petals for maximum flavor.
- Lightly spray the onion with cooking spray, then coat it in breadcrumbs, turning it to achieve even coverage.
- Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for optimal cooking.
- Place the prepared onion in the basket of the air fryer and cook for approximately 15-20 minutes, monitoring closely until it turns a beautiful golden brown.
- Once done, carefully remove the blooming onion and serve it immediately alongside your choice of dipping sauce.
Notes
Make-ahead tips: You can prep the onion a day in advance, soaking it in buttermilk and coating it before refrigerating.
