Description

A delightful appetizer featuring a crispy, seasoned coating on a tender onion, perfect for sharing with your favorite dip.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • Cooking spray
  • Dipping sauce (e.g., ranch, spicy mayo)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onion: Begin by peeling away the papery skin from your onion and slicing it downwards to create petals.
  2. Mix the flour mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Whisk until evenly blended.
  3. Submerge the prepared onion in buttermilk, allowing it to soak in the flavor and moisture.
  4. Carefully lift the onion from the buttermilk, letting any excess drip off, then gently coat it with your flour mixture, ensuring it reaches in between the petals for maximum flavor.
  5. Lightly spray the onion with cooking spray, then coat it in breadcrumbs, turning it to achieve even coverage.
  6. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for optimal cooking.
  7. Place the prepared onion in the basket of the air fryer and cook for approximately 15-20 minutes, monitoring closely until it turns a beautiful golden brown.
  8. Once done, carefully remove the blooming onion and serve it immediately alongside your choice of dipping sauce.

Notes

Make-ahead tips: You can prep the onion a day in advance, soaking it in buttermilk and coating it before refrigerating.
