Ingredients

- 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2/3 cup baking soda
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 8 hot dogs
- 8 slices cheddar cheese
- Coarse salt for sprinkling
- Mustard or your favorite dipping sauce (optional)
Instructions
- Activate the yeast by combining warm water, yeast, and sugar and letting it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- Mix dry ingredients: whisk together flour and salt in a large bowl.
- Add the yeast mixture to the flour and stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Let the dough rise in a greased bowl covered with plastic wrap for about an hour.
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Prepare boiling solution by boiling 10 cups of water with the baking soda.
- Shape the dough into ropes, wrap each around a hot dog and cheese slice, then pinch the ends.
- Boil each pretzel dog in the soda solution for 30 seconds.
- Place on baking sheets, brush with beaten egg, sprinkle with coarse salt, and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
- Cool slightly before serving with your favorite dipping sauces.
